EDL7500 Fall 2014 Educational Leadership and Ethics
I learned quite a bit in this course. The primary focus was to learn educational law and how it would possibly apply to me as an administrator in a Georgia public school. While I don’t teach in Georgia, I thoroughly enjoyed learning and interpreting law. I studied the details of FERPA, special education law, teacher and student discipline, charter schools, etc.
The primary way of studying was to listen to a lecture on the topic, say 5th amendment and search and seizure law. Then I would read court cases in which these topics were more clearly identified. After this, I would have a sample scenario. This scenario would include topics from previous modules, specific challenges that would require knowledge of the nuances of the law and previous court cases. The scenarios were never straight forward, and they often involved the most frustrating individuals who all had a penchant for doing the worst possible thing.

After combing through all of the scenario documents, I would write up a recommendation for action. It doesn’t sound like riveting work, I fully understand. But this course, beyond all others, sparked my interest greatly. I loved reading and learning about law. I hope to take some more courses like this in future programs.
