3.3 Online & Blended Learning
Candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators. (PSC 3.3/ISTE 3c)
Artifact: Online Syllabus
Reflection:
The online syllabus I have created as apart of my course work in the ITEC MED program is a great example of my ability to develop, model and facilitate and online and blended learning. I developed this artifact in the summer of 2014 for ITEC 7480, Online and Blended Learning. It was developed to help communicate essential course information and expectations for a potential blended class. My syllabus establishes course background information as well as to communicates necessary information to students and parents in order to better help model and facilitate the necessary structure of a blended and online learning experience. It contains pertinent information regarding work submission, assignments, and policies.
The standard for online and blended learning experiences is addressed in Standard 3.3. Standard 3.3 states that candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators. My syllabus represents the development and facilitation of a potential online learning course. This blended learning course employs the use of a variety of resources to model and facilitate the delivery of digital content by way of a learning management system (LMS). Continuing, my syllabus provides detailed information on the online aspects of the course and how they will enhance the course and student learning.
Developing this syllabus was a very important learning experience for me. Composing the artifact enlightened me to the myriad of logistical elements of facilitating online learning of which I was previously unaware. When developing my syllabus I had to determine course policies, technological requirements, and assess the digital content to be delivered. Certainly this experience has made me a more effective educator, and demonstrates my ability to model blended learning; however, the task was far from easy. I found establishing procedures and policies for an online environment quite challenging (especially considering the nature of online forums is quite fluid and always evolving). But, with time and collaboration with peers, I managed to find a comprehensive syllabus with effective policies. If I could do this assignment again, I would implement the syllabus in my own brick and mortar classroom now. We currently run with a class website, and the LMS has allowed for a blended learning experience for many. The syllabus would be a great addition to my beginning of the year tools.
The traditional boxed school is rapidly evolving, and many studies support the implementation of blended learning. Because education is evolving, we, as educators, must adapt. This means the creation of blended and online resources for our classes are of the utmost importance. My online syllabus has allowed me to be a model and facilitator of such adaption.
