3.1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning
Candidates model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. (PSC 3.1/ISTE 3a)
Artifact: Pre AP Vocabulary Wikispace
Reflection:
The artifact provided for standard 3.1 is a link to a Wikispace I created in order to facilitate the acquisition of rhetorical devices and terminology in my pre-AP English course in the spring of 2014. The Wikispace focused on increasing student engagement by utilizing collaborative learning strategies. This wiki was designed in order to model and facilitate effective collaborative learning, while facilitating effective classroom management at the same time. The site includes several rounds of instructions for students to collaboratively work through a series of vocabulary terms, and the subsequent student work based on these tasks.
Standard 3.1 requires candidates to model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies in order to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. This artifact demonstrates my understanding of online collaborative learning in order to enrich student learning. On the included Wikispace, I developed a series of tasks to be completed through the use of collaborative learning strategies. I modeled and facilitated the expectations of student work by providing an example at the beginning of the Wikipsace. I facilitated effective classroom management through the inclusion of very clear expectations, precise instructions, and the opportunity for students to work collaboratively online. Because this resource is being currently used by several of my departmental colleagues, it fairly represents my ability to model the effective use of classroom management strategies to my peers.
What is truly great about WikiSpaces is the fact that it necessitates collaboration among members. It is a collective space and perfect for modeling and facilitating collaborative learning. Students were engaged and very clear on what was expected of them, making for efficient modeling & facilitation of classroom management. I was, however, made quickly aware of the limitations of WikiSpaces as many students who were working on the same page experienced issues with their work being erased. With that being said, I believe that wikis are a great resource for connecting students globally. If given the opportunity to improve my efforts, I would like to improve upon the amount of student contribution so that the class wiki wasn’t limited to just one unit of study. Rather, I would like to see a class wiki develop each unit, and become a comprehensive guide for students at the end of the year.
Efficiently managing and facilitating collaborative learning are essential to a successful classroom. Digital tools allow for a myriad of opportunities for teachers to model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning. Because I was able to share my learning with my peers, my ability to model powerful and effective classroom management and collaborative learning through the use of digital tools was aided greatly. Most importantly, students have been able to work together through collaborative learning online, and their engagement in what would otherwise be considered a dull subject is increased.
