1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: Emerging Technologies Presentation
Reflection:
The Emerging Technology Presentation meets the expectations for standard 1.3, Policies, Procedures, Programs, and Funding. I created this presentation for ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design, in the fall of 2013. This presentation and report was over the emerging technological resource, discussion boards, and their use within a learning management system (LMS). The presentation was created for school administrators, and the extensive research reviewed the educational uses, potential impact upon the school, the manner with which the technology adheres to The Country Day School’s vision for technology use.
Standard 1.3, Policies, Procedures, Programs, and Funding, stresses the need for candidates to “research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs, and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision.” The Emerging Technology Presentation is composed of an in-depth body of research regarding discussion boards in a secondary school setting. The report includes information on procedures for implementation, funding opportunities, policies for usage, and programs for technical support for discussion boards.
The Emerging Technology Presentation provided me the opportunity for exponential growth. I learned quite a deal about the emerging tool of discussion boards and the amazing potential they have to influence student learning and classroom instruction in a meaningful and authentic way. Through the funding portion of the presentation, I learned about the various means available to schools that can support new technologies in schools. I learned a great deal about the policies and procedures in place at The Country Day School that pertain to new technology adoption and the grant opportunities available within the community. This presentation and subsequent research led to meaningful conversations with school administration regarding the adoption of and policies for use of a learning management system. If I could further develop this artifact in any way, I would seek out further information and research regarding the limitations of the tool in order to help the school make a more informed decision.
Technology is growing at exponential rates, and the potential new technologies have on affecting huge change on education and the way in which students learn is staggering. Discussion boards have the capability to alter the way teachers manage their classrooms and facilitate learning. They can make learning more authentic and global. As a direct result of this presentation, The Country Day School selected a learning management system that offered a highly efficient discussion board feature. With this adoption, extensive training went into developing the staff in their usage and implementation of discussion boards in their classrooms.
