3.6 Selecting and Evaluation Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Emerging Technology Presentation
Reflection: The Emerging Technology Presentation meets the expectations for standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools and Resources. I created this presentation for ITEC 7445, Multimedia and Web Design, in the fall of 2013. This presentation and report was over the emerging technological resource, discussion boards, and their use within a learning management system (LMS). The presentation was a result of collaboration with other teachers and administrators and was created for the director of the school. It includes the extensive research reviewed the educational uses, potential impact upon the school, the manner with which the technology adheres to The Country Day School’s vision for technology use.
Standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools and Resources, stresses the need for candidates “collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure.” The Emerging Technology Presentation is composed of an in-depth body of research conducted in collaboration with input from administrators and teachers in order to help select and evaluate the right discussion boards in a secondary school setting. The report includes information on procedures for implementation, funding opportunities, policies for usage, compatibility within the community, and programs for technical support for discussion boards.
The Emerging Technology Presentation provided me the opportunity for exponential growth. I learned quite a deal about the emerging tool of discussion boards and the amazing potential they have to influence student learning and classroom instruction in a meaningful and authentic way. Through the initial research of the presentation, I collaborated with many people and learned a good deal about what teachers and administrators look for in bringing new tools into the school and classrooms. This collaboration ultimately aided in my ability to select and evaluate various discussion board options. I also learned a great deal about the policies and procedures in place at The Country Day School that pertain to new technology adoption how to best select a tool for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility within this infrastructure. This presentation and subsequent research led to meaningful conversations with school administration regarding the adoption of and policies for use of a learning management system. If I could further develop this artifact in any way, I would seek out further information and research regarding the limitations of the tool in order to help the school make a more informed decision.
Technology is growing at exponential rates, and the potential new technologies have on affecting huge change on education and the way in which students learn is staggering. Discussion boards have the capability to alter the way teachers manage their classrooms and facilitate learning. They can make learning more authentic and global. As a direct result of this evaluative presentation, The Country Day School selected a learning management system that offered a highly efficient discussion board feature, and this tool has, thus far, met the criteria for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility within our technology infrastructure. With this adoption, extensive collaboration and training with administration and teachers went into developing proper usage and implementation of discussion boards in the classroom.
