3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
Artifact: British Literature LMS
Reflection:
The artifact included for Standard 3.7 is a screenshot of my classroom website through my school’s learning management system (LMS). I made this course page in 2013 and it constantly updated and improved since then. This site is the primary means by which I collaborate locally and globally with students, parents, peers and the larger community. It provides course and instructional information information, blogs, discussion boards, learning links, and group photos of the class.
My LMS is an important digital communication piece because it allows for the sharing of information outside of the regular brick and mortar classroom. My class page is the primary form of communication with students and family members. All necessary information regarding my course is communicated through this website on a daily basis. Students are frequent contributors the LMS discussion board and blog which aids in the peer communication. Also, I frequently use the LMS platform and class page to share resources with other educators. Undoubtedly, the LMS and class website facilitates communication and collaboration among students, parents, peers, and the larger community.
Keeping up with the classroom page has proved to be both challenging and rewarding. Initially I started the LMS out of obligation and to facilitate the need to communicate due dates with students; however its functionality and use quickly evolved to a power form of communication and community building among my classes and the larger community. Students gained interest and motivation with the interactive features of the discussion board. Many people (peers) have come to me to ask how to better set up and use their classroom pages as a result of students’ interest. If I were to do this resource again, or if I were to try and improve upon it, I would solicit more feedback from students regarding the resources I include and the design. While they are able to contribute and create meaningful content, they don’t have much say in the set up process, as is.
My class page is a great means of communication and collaboration for all involved and interested parties. Parents have access to all resources and feel like a member of the class. Other classrooms share discussion boards and information with my classes. Students visit the website for information, but also to enjoy a sense of community and collaboration. Finally, the page is a great resource for me and other educators to build upon and continually improve our practice.
