6.1 Continuous Learning
Candidates demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve personal productivity and professional practice. (PSC 6.1/ISTE 6a, 6b)
Artifact: Literature Review
Reflection:
My artifact for Standard 6.1 is a literature review completed for ITEC 7470 and was completed in summer 2013. This review, “What is the Current Usage and Subsequent Need for Web 2.0 Tools in Secondary Education?” provides a detailed summary of how Web 2.0 tools are currently used and how they could be used in a secondary classroom. The literature review focuses on research that has been done on current uses and best practices of Web 2.0 tools. The topic of this literature review was selected to align with the purpose and objectives of my capstone project; however, I ended up using it to develop a workshop for staff at my school.
Standard 6.1, Continuous Learning, states that candidates continually grow in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply knowledge and skills to improve personal productivity and professional practice. In order to complete this literature review, I researched a current and emerging technology, Web 2.0 tools. I researched articles and resources to build a broad knowledge base regarding current and emerging technologies. I applied my knowledge and skills to answer a self-created question regarding professional practice with Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. From this research and learning I created a workshop for my peers regarding best practices and websites, blogs, and discussion boards (current technology).
This experience was invaluable to my development in the program. I learned a great deal about the process of researching current and emerging technologies and using peer reviewed articles to help guide me and help me continually grow as a technology leader. Furthermore I learned a great deal about best practices with using Web 2.0 tools. The process of researching and then writing the review helped me develop my personal productivity as I also needed to research APA style and apply it. This experience showed me that the field of educational technology is constantly evolving. If I could do this assignment again, I would add more research regarding the use of digital gradebooks and online grading programs in order to communicate with students and parents. This would have helped me immensely in the completion of my capstone project.
Overall, the completion of this Literature Review was fundamental in my development as a technology leader. It built a great foundation for researching peer reviewed articles, synthesizing research to form an educated opinion, and apply that newly acquired knowledge to my practice and my partnerships within my school. From this experience I went on to deliver a workshop on Web 2.0 tools in the classroom, and I had several peers seek me out to help them use Weebly and discussion boards in their classrooms. The impact of this is still seen today.
